The Omen

Yesterday was my hearing date in Woodstock, VA, for the equipment citation bestowed upon me by handsome Virginia State Trooper D.A. Dean, Jr.

I departed my humble abode on March 6, 2012, at FIVE AM! First stop on this obscenely frigid twenty-five-degree morning? Local McDonalds. Didn’t seem decent to begin the trip without iced coffee, another of my favorite addictions. After my order was filled, I pulled into a parking space to assign my new GPS the address for Shenandoah Valley General District Court.

In my peripheral vision, I noticed a couple of men meandering around the fast food joint’s lot. Must be Ronald’s employees. No sooner had I reversed to leave, I realized the Garmin navigator was in night mode. Ugh. That makes me bonkers! For a quick adjustment, I sidled my auto out of the path of potential drive-thru customers and changed the setting. Why do those two guys keep looking at me? There’s only me and one other vehicle here, right? I glanced over at the latter: a large truck. Ohmigod. No way.

Nobody except me could unintentionally cross paths with the Virginia State Police Search & Recovery Dive Team, in Holeandcorner Town, before dawn’s early light, while en route to take on another member of their agency over a traffic ticket. ‘Twas a sign!

Million and a half miles later, I arrived on location an hour ahead of schedule. Hoping to crib a snapshot or twenty, I settled in a nifty spot at the end of the sole convenient street to the judicial building to watch for Trooper Dean’s arrival. A blue and gray cruiser eventually passed by, both occupants of the marked car blatantly staring at me. Well, it’s not like they don’t know what I drive. I assumed they’d also been forewarned about my penchant for toying with Law Enforcement. Happy happy happy. Joy joy joy.

Twenty minutes prior to the nine o’clock docket -- which my name was on -- I maneuvered my wheels between the double white lines and cut off the ignition. The policemen were nowhere to be seen; obviously they’d made a hurried exit from their transportation. Aww... too bad. Undeterred, I shot a few pictures of their ride.

Beyond the wooden doors, I sat and soaked up the scene. Aside from attorneys and lawboys, I was, as usual, the exclusive person wearing full courtroom-appropriate attire. Trooper Dean was standing on the officials’ side, near the judge’s bench; his squad car confrère, Trooper Backup, was seated on us peons’ side, in the last pew. I got a kick out of the notion that, due to moi, the delightful Dean felt compelled to lure some badged buddy into accompanying him. Reminded me of when a spiteful Trooper B. Long, battling me under his guise of “improper stopping on highway” rather than the reality of “how dare you take a photograph of a cop,” brought his pal Sgt. Bailey along to Bedford Court.

Back outside, I noticed another fellow with the State Police showing face. Prolly here for the ten o’clock docket. I added him and his 5227 to my memory card.

I did, via clandestine methods not worth mentioning at the moment, manage to capture on camera Trooper D.A. Dean Jr. However, since he’d testified he’d “cut me a break” by not charging me with speeding, I’ll cut him a break by not publishing his image. (You’re welcome, Officer.) Take my word for it, he seriously is a beautiful example of the male species. Why can’t he reside a smidgen bit nearer by?

If you’re wondering what the verdict was for my violation of 46.2-1003 -- tag lights out:

Case dismissed!

Perhaps if I get a yen to, I’ll type up a detailed account of what transpired in front of Mrs. Judge.

So. Yes, I spent $50 in gas when I could’ve merely paid the $30 fine. Yes, I didn’t have to journey three hours when I could’ve merely stayed home and re-polished my nails. But it’s the principle of the thing. Oh, yeah, plus the entertainment value. And that’s really what’s most important here, isn’t it?

PD In My City

Local Law Enforcement members where I live are pretty darn nifty. Most of them are nice and the few that aren’t, aren’t mean either. Overall grade: A+

That last one’s my favorite -- picture, that is, not the officer. ;)

Sometimes I think when it comes to name queries, it’s just the officers looking themselves up.

I’m a little disappointed to find out tony gattuso va ranks a sorry #48 on Google. But that’s probably because I have him on my site as Anthony Gattuso.

mystatepoliceman.blogspot. com [sic] is so very specific. I’m elated my newest blog about Richmond Petersburg Virginia State Police Special Agent Anthony (Tony) Gattuso is garnering such explicit attention.

Seeing “intellectual types,” “jade taskforce,” and “drug …” lookups together make me laugh.

I have no idea why I HeArTE JADE would appear as a result for a 37 Ford anything.

My favorite still rocks the search engine wars:

Infinitesimal Reflections AKA Evidence Locker #3

(Left: ATF Agent Michael Moore
Center: CPD Detective Todd Lucas
Right: ATF Agent Dave Stone)

From my last court experience, I learned:
  • The fantastic fanatic ATFer David Stone is purportedly in the Richmond VA area, not Washington DC as I’d been led to believe. Kinda cool since I don’t make many trips to DC, whereas I do venture over the Richmond way quite a bit these days. Now, let’s see, where, oh where, is that Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives office located again?
  • Charlottesville Detective (and have I ever mentioned gang aficionado?) Todd Lucas is not merely good-natured, he’s borderline comedian.
  • Scott Cox looks better in a Greene County Sheriff’s Office uniform than he did in an Albemarle County Police Department uniform. But he’s decidedly yummiest in Tac garb.
  • Whom. Eons back, VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigations’ Special Agent Jason Trent blurted out to me that I’d published photographs of a car belonging to a Jefferson Area Drug Enforcement Task Force Confidential Informant. ‘Twas news to me. So, for the purpose of removing said images from I HeArTE JADE, I begged him to tell me which; he, being LEO-typical contrite to helpfulness, refused. Here it is, like, hello, over a year later, and thanks to Greene County Commonwealth Attorney Ron Morris and ATF Agent John Stoltz inadvertent rendering, I have the information! Only… I don’t want to delete pictures of the vehicle at this point because:
  • They’ve already been on the site for, like, hello, over a year.
  • They’re in a hilarious post, stemming from a hilarious event.
  • The victim of the CI is wise to who snitched him out anyway.
  • I don’t want to draw any more attention to them than, well, than I just did.
  • Speaking of crazy admissions by the CA and Mr. Stoltz, I was shocked to hear them acknowledge jastoltz is in fact the computer login user ID of the latter. I mean, sure, obviously I knew it was, but I didn’t think they would want anyone else to know I knew. And I almost laughed out loud when Mr. Morris woefully confessed to the courtroom they’re aware I have sources but were unable to unearth them. Yes, yes, yes! I protect my CIs better than policemen do theirs! Nah ner nah ner nah ner.
  • Officers do a very good job of weaseling out of answering questions they don’t want to.
  • Officers don’t do a very good job of appearing as if they aren’t trying to weasel out of answering questions they don’t want to.
  • If I had a penny for every time one of the local rank and file cops as well as Federal Agents name-dropped C-ville’s Chief of Police, Tim Longo, I’d be able to pay off all my court costs.
  • When I grow up I reallyreallyreally really want to be a Computer Forensic Expert. Or maybe a Fairy Princess.
  • There are both advantages and disadvantages to not setting the time and date correctly on one’s camera.
  • My court-appointed lawyer was the uber-awesomest.
  • Finally, I learned that a Judge -- even one who’s a former State Trooper -- will not always side with members of Law Enforcement. ‘Specially if doing so puts him at risk of seeming plumb brainsick.

5 For 5

If anyone wants to know why five non-Task-Force Officers -- represented by the accompanying pictures -- are soon to have every ounce of information about their respective lives efficiently rifled through by yours truly and potentially subsequently dispersed as humorously as muster-able in a feature spread on I HeArTE JADE, just ring up Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney Denise Lunsford and ask: 434-972-4072

Oh, and, while you’re on the phone with Miz Lunsford, would you please tell her I thought the femdom-evoking-yet-flatteringly-flirty heels she wore today were waaaaay to drool for?

Trio Of Time-Takers

Subtitle: Explanation For Infrequency Of Entries

The State:

I run my fingertips around the firearm tucked by his shirt. He and I are in my vehicle tucked beside an unoccupied residence. The thickness of rainfall further secrets our encounter. I am beyond rhapsodic he contacted me -- on this exact day, and, in the first place, months ago. I. Adore. Him. A kindred spirit he is, connecting with me like no other. His smile indicates he’s not opposed to my ever-increasing fixation with him. To the beat of descending water we speak about everything. And nothing. His eyes coruscate with amusement. I play with his hand while he talks. He is smart. So smart. He’s entirely no good for information on the JADE Task Force; they should be grateful. But he does offer a deeper glimpse into the world of Law Enforcement -- insight on badged boys and their toys. I think I’ll keep him.

The County:

The street light illuminates his sinewy shape well. It’s an odd place, odd time, for us to meet but it’s all we can swing. I haven’t seen him in, it seems, ages. Two weeks is ages, correct? He gives me the lowdown on “the hen house.” Yes, that’s really what he calls his department. Funny, another ACPD guy used that same term as a description just a month ago. Are they friends? Being the tease he is, my attractive companion serves me Jefferson Area Drug Enforcement gossip last. Sometimes I have to weed out his vitriol to find the facts. I poke him in the ribs and tell him his malevolence is showing. He cracks a cop joke which makes me laugh which makes him laugh. Verbal dancing is his forte. He wraps his arms around me tight before parting. He’s right, I really ought to be more available for him.

The City:

He stands in front of me his breath raspy, his body taut with fury. What have I done? I’ve depended on him, trusted him with nearly everything. The JADE items he’s been holding for safe-keeping for me he’s now holding for ransom from me. He feels used, neglected. I vehemently shake my head back and forth at every accusation he makes. He knows I won’t lie to him. Much more crucially, he knows I will never betray him. My eyes still wet, the side of my face still stinging, I cautiously approach him and untangle the remnants of a few long black hairs of mine that linger intertwined in his clenched fist. I have to calm him down. I have to fix this. Even as bruises are forming on me I tell him he’s still my favorite. I need him.

Facades

Pearls of sweat trail down his face under the scorching heat of the day as the sun prepares to set. With his broad shoulders reflecting years of good posture, he sits outside in the chair across from me and says he is nervous. He is, I remind myself, an area officer meeting with the purported “enemy,” the infamous operator of I HeArTE JADE. I give him an opportunity to put his anxiety into words, all the while visually siphoning in as many details as my brain can process without hazarding cerebral spillage.

He’s dressed casual rugged, but there’s a scent of hauteur that betrays the working-man impression his clothes are meant to convey. His footwear likely cost more than a new set of tires.

He’s handsome; not really my type, but no doubt the bulk of the female population would find him incredibly appealing. Definitely a Badge Bunny’s dream. I already know good looks run in his family. In fact, I know a lot about him -- probably much more than he thinks I do; then again, probably much less than he thinks I do.

He tells me he’s unarmed, lifts his shirt to prove it. Too bad -- the presence of a firearm paired with the sight of his belly would’ve been ultra sexy. I tell him I’m not recording this, but I don’t bother baring body parts to verify it. This exchange, in all its oddity, I suppose is our individual way of establishing trust with each other.

I’m not certain why he wanted to meet me; I’m even less certain why I agreed to it. Long before we part ways, what I am certain of is this little hook-up of ours is a one-time thing.

Granted, he’s very nice. Only, when I combine his cordiality with his striking physique, illusory blue-collar attire, and decent intellectual level, and pit it against my pink and black hair, tattoos, loosely-fitted T with jeans and high heels, and deficient gray matter, the overall effect is that he’s hopped off his pedestal to interact with the gutter girl. Whether he’s looking down his nose at me or not or has some inscrutable ulterior motive isn’t the point though, what matters is how to make the most of him before he retreats to his version of higher ground.

The conversation is enjoyable. He, I believe, does most of the talking, which suits me ducky. The problem is the more he speaks, the more human he becomes. Like he’s not some cardboard cookie-cut cop to make fun of or pull a Use ‘n Toss on. He is still a policeman however, and has every ounce of that peculiar-to-Law-Enforcement fusion of ego and humility.

The bright rays from the sky are sneaking around the building and before we completely lose our shade -- my companion’s already been perspiring enough to create a salty wading pool at our toes -- I suggest we move our Talkabout elsewhere.

We spend some of our time together in my parked vehicle with the AC running. He is bothered by the aroma of oil coming from the engine through the vents but at least he is no longer troubled by the stares of strangers, both discomforts I don’t gather he has until he openly announces them. I feel bad for him, but I’m not a darn mechanic and how was I to know he’d be so embarrassed by my appearance?

In short order I sense his life is exactly how he likes it, perfect, with everyone and everything in it positioned just so. I suspect meeting me secretly is about as big of the kind of rebellious risk as he’d dare take; my opinion solidifies when he seeks acknowledgement that this get-together is truly a “courageous” move on his part.

Amusing, the idea that after I’ve viewed so many of these guys as my personal guinea pigs now it seems one of them is doing the same to me.

Over the extent of our socializing I sporadically try to test or fluster him. He takes it all in stride, offering blah to no reaction. It doesn’t even faze him when I coquettishly remark on his admirable derriere -- nope, not even a hint of blushing. Cool, he is. Plus fascinating. I’m sorry he doesn’t find me… interesting? entertaining? attractive? whatever it is he was looking for. Can’t keep a man’s attention for the long term without allure of some sort. No further attention means no further information. Which bites.

Our visit is ending. I’m generally pleased with the whole experience, although I believe he would’ve preferred to be in the company of, hell, anyone else. Oh, he says all the appropriate things, mind you, but I’m no twit. He serves up an “I’ll call you” and I force myself to repress a grin. Men really do this I’ll-call-you thing? My gosh, I thought that was fiction! And I didn’t even have sex with him before hearing it!

I ring him up later in the week, purposely choosing a day he’s already mentioned he’ll be free. He totally brushes me off. This time I don’t hide the huge smile that hits my face.

The Thin Blue Circle

Eons ago, due to the amount of Charlottesville officers assigned to Jefferson Area Drug Enforcement, I thought it’d be a good idea to cultivate a source in the city’s force. Anybody who pays attention to I HeArTE JADE is well-aware I’ve got one there.

From my relationship with him came an Albemarle policeman whom I incorporated into things -- which played out extra nicely since the Task Force also has numerous members deriving from the County Police Department. (He, ironically, knew me only because the other agency’s Police Chief, Timothy Longo, had at the time been behind the scenes gossiping about who specifically was operating this site; a twist I liken to that whole “Loose Lips Sink Ships” thing. So… hail to the Chief!)

With Jimmy Bunch being the sole detective from the University of Virginia PD in JADE, and Joe Fleming being its lone Virginia State Police investigator, I didn’t bother trying to get an “in” there or there. Shortly after BCI Special Agent Jason Trent invaded the scene, I halfheartedly re-evaluated the importance of the latter but right about the time I was seriously considering it might be necessary to have a spy in the State field, well, it’s not exactly an angle one can work from jail. Lesson learned; now “no source is unneeded” is right up there with my “no detail is too small” -- friggin’ top of my list.

Until I’d met my two darling cops, I’d assumed the local Police Departments and their respective employees generally liked each other, with maybe a mite of healthy competition thrown in for the hell of it. As it turns out, that isn’t really the case at all. It’s not even the case within JADE, a group of men who practically spend more time with each other than they do with their families.

Anyhow, sometimes it’s just the inner circle I’ve been recently talking to, or, more like, listening to, combined with a related event, rather than a genuine interest I have in any given lawman, that determine the entries I make here.

For instance, the other day a UVA patrolman -- like I said, “lesson learned” -- mentioned Jeff Maddra. I knew who he was talking about ‘cause this wasn’t the first time Mr. Maddra’s name had come up, and, actually, I’d done a cursory search on him previously and discovered this picture of him:

He looks like he should be cast as a character in Southland, doesn’t he?

Okay, then, the morning following that chat, I think it was, I happened to be in the clerk’s office at the Charlottesville General District Court/Police Department paying off fines and fees and costs, and any other word they can call it to get more money out of a person for the same conviction, when in strolls Mr. Maddra. Based on his attire -- a light-colored suit, dress shirt, dark shoes, and tie -- I figured he was taking care of his on-duty obligations while off-duty. Certainly no big deal.

Later, that evening, true to form, I dug up his Facebook profile, since of course he’d use a social network like every other badge-sporter seems to use. I saved it too, as it’s not unheard of for these guys to spaz and change or delete those accounts.

And now the entire nothing, about an individual I’m indifferent to, is all neatly integrated into a post.

See how that worked?
